Update 11 a.m. -- Chicago police have secured video that reportedly shows a man emerging from a vehicle to attack the woman.  A CPD spokesperson said the attack I'd believed to be sexually motivated. Investigators have not determined if a sexual assault took place, police said. Meanwhile, DePaul this morning said the victim is a recent graduate of the university. Our original report follows.

A 22-year-old female DePaul University student was found unresponsive and bleeding from her neck in the 2300 block of North Halsted early Thursday morning, according to Chicago police and sources who are familiar with the incident. The apparent attack took place less than eight hours after the school warned its community about another knife attack.

Passersby found the woman on the ground outside of a DePaul facility bleeding from her neck, about 50 feet from where the attack apparently unfolded around 3:30 a.m. Police did not know the motive behind the crime or if the woman had been robbed. Officers initially thought the woman may have been struck by a car until they discovered slash wounds to her face and neck.

The victim, who has studied anthropology at the school, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.

Halsted Street remained closed to traffic between Fullerton and Belden as investigators worked the scene at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

About eight hours before the woman as attacked, DePaul’s public safety office issued an alert after a man was cut with a knife near the school’s athletic field.

The alert said a man used one of the school’s emergency callboxes to summon help after another man cut him with a knife at 920 West Belden shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday. DePaul said the offender accused the victim of bumping into him and then pulled out a knife and cut the victim before leaving the area.

It was not known if there is any connection between the two incidents.

Descriptions were not available for either offender.
