Uptown: Charges filed in two recent shootings

Charges have been filed in connection with two more of this year's shootings in the Uptown neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

A two-month surge in shootings and “shots fired” incidents began with a double shooting in the 1000 block of West Argyle on March 19th. Police said two men were standing on the sidewalk when a gunman approached them and fired shots at 8:09 p.m.

Now charged in that shooting is 21-year-old Keyonta Alexander of the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Prosecutors charged Alexander with one count of attempted first-degree murder. He is being held without bail.

The second arrest was made in connection with the shooting of a 30-year-old woman in the 5000 block of North Winthrop at 8:42 p.m. on April 28th. Prosecutors said 39-year-old Naomi Turner shot the victim in the leg, then fled in a black SUV. Turner and the victim knew each other, police said.

Turner, of the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. She is also being held without bail.

Turner was arrested on May 1st, and Alexander was arrested at his home in the 6800 block of South Calumet on April 9th, police said.

Police leaders announced that arrests had been made in the cases during a community meeting last Wednesday in Uptown. CPD spokesmen later provided details of the arrests to CWBChicago. Investigators said the city’s surveillance camera network has been instrumental in solving the cases and said the shooting victims were specifically targeted.

One Uptown shooting this year remains unsolved: A 25-year-old woman was shot in her right leg as she walked with two other people in the 800 block of West Agatite at 10:17 p.m.

Shell casings from two different caliber weapons were found about 100 yards west of where the victim and her companions were standing, suggesting that two people may have fired shots, according to an officer at the scene.
