Loop Restaurant Worker Charged With Faking Robbery

Approximate locations of the fake robbery (1) and fire (2).
Police say a Loop restaurant worker made up the story about being robbed at gunpoint as he walked to make a bank deposit on Monday morning. Jefferson Park resident Mina Asaad, 25, told police that a Dodge Charger rolled up on him and two men in the back seat displayed handguns while taking his wallet and the restaurant’s bank deposit around 9 a.m. on Monday, according to a police spokesman.

Asaad has now admitted to fabricating the incident at Bibibop, 24 East Jackson, and admitted to having the bank deposit as well as his own wallet, police said.

Prosecutors charged him with one misdemeanor count of filing of a false report to a public safety agency. He is due in court on August 28. Asaad’s mugshot was not immediately available from Chicago police.

A stolen van that police believe was used in two shootings since Sunday was found abandoned and set on fire in the 300 block of North Lower Michigan Avenue early Tuesday, police said. Passers-by reported the black Ford Transit burning around midnight. Arriving police officers determined that the vehicle had just been involved in a pursuit with Chicago police who lost the van on an expressway. Investigators believe the Transit was used in two recent shootings: Monday afternoon in the 10th (Ogden) Police District and Sunday night in the 9th (Deering) District.
