Body Of Uptown Newborn, Tossed From 8th Floor By Mother, Sat Unclaimed For 22 Months (That Ends Today)

It has been 22-months since her own mother tossed the minutes-old newborn baby from an eighth-floor apartment window in Uptown. But her body was never claimed. Until now.

The tiny girl survived the 80-foot drop and lied exposed in the cold November air until a passerby happened to see her lying in the grass. An hour later, she died from her massive injuries.

This summer, the girl’s mother, Mubashra Uddin, received an outrageous sentence for killing her own baby: four years probation. Uddin was 19 when she tossed her first child out the window to hide the birth from her parents.

But the sentencing of Uddin was not the end of the story.

It turns out that for the past 22-months the dead infant’s body has gone unclaimed by her family.

Today, finally, she will be laid to rest.

Rest In His Arms, a non-profit group that arranges for the burial of unclaimed children, has taken on the task (more of an honor, really) of burying the girl.

Services will be held at 10 o’clock this morning at St. Mary’s Parish, 10 North Buffalo Grove Road in suburban Buffalo Grove.

A second girl, found in a Dolton, IL, shed this summer, will be laid to rest with her.

Both babies will then be buried at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

Rest In His Arms has named the Uptown girl Baby Mariam Jane Uddin. “Her family heritage is Pakistani, so we named her Mariam after the Virgin Mary and also because it honors her heritage,” the group said.

Donations to Rest In His Arms may be made HERE.

  1. Just curious, what would of the justice system done to her in Pakistan? Beating, death penalty, I don't know. But maybe this is why murder is so not-a-big deal in Chicago, cause of bullshit like this. If I were the Judge or Jury, I would give her 50 years in prison, or death penalty, she picks. No other options. A poor innocent baby slaughtered and killed, and probation???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so f------cking disgusted by this BS system we have here in this city, that glorifies violent offenders and murderers. Im pretty sure I am not alone in this feeling.

  2. Horrifically sad. Simply unimaginable that justice will not be served for this childs tortuous death.

  3. You killed your daughter and, after getting off scot-free, you couldn't be bothered to claim her remains and give her a decent burial. Your "strict, religious" Muslim parents couldn't, either. And you wouldn't be troubled long enough to even give your daughter, a human being, a name. Just a problem you tossed in the trash.

  4. Disgusting behavior. The family wouldn't even acknowledge her existence to bury her? And a simply outrageous "sentence". At 19, you know exactly what you're doing; I really don't give a shit WHAT your cultural background is. Horrible all around. That poor, poor baby.

  5. Thank you so much for reporting this, CWB. What a beautiful act of love and compassion from this group. Seemingly the only such act baby Miriam ever received.

  6. I have never understood why a person who is 6 minutes old doesn't have the same rights as a 60 year old. Would Mubashra have received the same sentence if she threw one of her 60 year old parent's from an eight story window and just left them there for some one to discover and never claim the body? Nice job judge and jury. Why even bother with probation? A complete disgrace. Bless Rest in His Arms.

  8. Heartbreaking story. Thank you, Rest In His Arms, for showing such grace in laying these children to rest with dignity. And thank you CWB for reporting on this. As for the Uddin family: I hope this haunts you every day for the rest of your miserable lives.

  9. Great parents you got there Mubashra. They taught you well. They are worse than you.

  10. What happened to this infant was a travesty. But all this religious talk makes me sick. If there truly was a god who cared, this child would have never died. You can make all the excuses you want, but there is no scientific evidence that proves that a god exists. Period.

  11. Rest In His Arms, you are doing a good thing. Thank you. I have been following this story since it happened. Infanticide is treated lightly by judges across the country. I cannot understand why. As others have pointed out, the mother was 19 years old, not a child. As a feminist, it bothers me that she was not treated as an adult where actions have consequences.

  12. There is a GOD ! It is humans that make a choice to do Good or Evil. This girl chose to do the worst thing humanly possible, she took the life of an angel who didn't have a chance to become an adult. She chose to take what gift God was giving her. Her judgment from God will be far greater than our justice system. Shame on the Grandparents who are also choosing to do wrong by not bury this little precious angel. This child even though it was a horrific way to die is in a much better place than any of us here in Heaven . Thank you Rest in his Arms for you are truly a blessing and God will reward those for helping these Children that humans have hurt in same way or another. Mariam may you rest in our Heavenly fathers arms.

  14. Can you please name Judge for the record, I would like to not only NOT vote for him/her but also write a letter to them saying my true feeling on this ridiculous "punishment".
Probation, for intentional murder of a baby, Wow, I am speechless.
