Another Man Found Dead At Boystown Bathhouse; Second Of The Year

A 31-year-old man has been pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in a Boystown bathhouse Tuesday morning. Police are conducting a death investigation.

Today’s incident is the second death since January at Steamworks Baths, 3246 North Halsted.

Town Hall cops responded to a call of an unresponsive man around 5:10 a.m., according to Chicago police spokesman Jose Estrada. The man was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death has not been determined and Area North detectives are conducting a death investigation, Estrada said.

A police source said the man was found in or near room 308 of the sprawling facility. Evidence of GHB drug use was found, the source said.

GHB is a common club drug that is used to increase sex drive but is also used to facilitate date rape.

Today’s visits to Steamworks are the second of the year for homicide detectives and evidence technicians.

On January 23, a 36-year-old suburban man was found dead in the bathhouse’s jacuzzi and sauna area.

  2. Drugs and unusually high temperatures, what could go wrong. If this was a bar the city would be moving to shut it down. Those aldermanic campaign contributions work.

    1. This place has been around longer than the current Alderman - and is licensed by the city. I used to live around the corner and they were always a very quiet neighbor.

    2. A quiet neighbor? Well, yeah. Dead people are quiet.

    3. I've tried that G shit it's not good it instantly knocked me out and whoever gave it to them probably just left them for dead some fuck buddy didn't give a shit

    4. I mean, if Whole Foods had two people drop dead there in 6 months, the city would probably shut it down. But hopefully this won't be a trend. I feel bad for the dude who died - he was just out to have fun and got carried away.

  3. The difference is that Steamworks has a strict no drug policy. Unfortunately, they can't stop people from doing drugs before they go there. Bars serve people excessive amounts of alcohol in their establishment and that's why they are shut down.

    1. Then why are there poppers in vending machine? Strictly no drugs is a joke Thats what the place it known for... Steamworks a place for Dirty drugs and even dirtier sex.

    2. Bags are regularly checked and people are refused entry. These are the same people who would die elsewhere using drugs.

    3. Poppers is an illegal drug?

  4. Still don't get why GHB is used recreationally- must be a gay sex thing. Sodium Oxylate (the rX version of GHB) is notoriously difficult for users to properly titrate to body mass and metabolism. And the results are so finiky: too much causes respiratory suppression, too little causes emotional instability/over-amplification (that's totally dependant on the users state of mind: feeling pissed, and it's like a Roid Rage, feeling good and its like nirvana only you won't remember it) and in the middle there's easily open to suggestion/deep sleep/passing out along with the basic loss of memory. What's the point of an illicit drug if you won't recall any of it?

    1. It's roughly a cross between feeling drunk and on ecstasy, more on the drunk side though. The claim that you can't remember anything is false, it's pretty much the same as being drunk, and the analogy extends to if you take too much you may black out. This is not rohypnol, it's ghb/gbl/b. Addiction is an ugly thing -- keep in mind this person was taking potent drugs on a tuesday at 3am, they clearly have no life to go to....

    2. This person was very loved and well liked . He was out partying on his day off. How dare u say he had no life u didn't know him at all!!!!!

      Delete
    3. He had no life if he was looking for "intimacy" (as I heard one frequent Steamworks patron call his interactions there - Lord help him too) or "partying" on his day off in an STD/drug den. There's an entire lakefront to enjoy on your day off...for free too. Say "Hi" to somebody out there once in a while and see what happens. It's gotta be better than lurking in dark corners or lying on a bed with your butt in the air with the door open.

    4. I agree. He was a gentle, sweet, talented man who did not deserve to die because some moron used a date-rape drug on him. And his cell phone was taken. Probably by the perp.

  5. GHB is only 1 of the other 48 drugs used on and about that strip. Sidetrack boasts of how they finally felt free to place a sign on their door decades ago without fear or backlash but this place still only has an address plate.....because people are ashamed of it. The place needs to be shut down. We can get married now. Strutting around in the dark like upright walking animals searching for their prey....high as a kite....

    1. No. There's not. And gays, especially in Chicago need to look their drug addictions and drug trade square in the eye(along with the suicides) and quit worrying about medicine for Cuba and other nonsense.

    2. Yes, there is... Be it heroin, meth or G almost everyone has been touched one way or another.

    4. I have not been "touched one way or another" by heroin, meth or G. Neither has anyone in my family. I've asked. Neither has any of my friends. I've asked. You just hang out with the wrong crowd.

    5. Exactly. They think this is "normal" out there.

  9. Love the credit of the pic to Gay Party Blog

"We tried to check out Steamworks but my friend was kicked out before he even got inside because they said he was too drunk. I mean how can you be too drunk for a bathhouse? I always thought the reason for the place was for a Detox. Maybe they would rather you be on Meth inside Steamworks."

  10. Steamworks isn't closing (nor is there any need for it to close); the tax revenues from that place alone probably are enough to fund the alderman salaries of the Three Stooges of Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Uptown.

  11. Look tjis place is a horrible establishment i used to work there and when the cops come they make an announcement tellimg everyone to stop having sex and to get to your locker or close your room door before they let the cops in ... they claim to be a drug free place but half the staff is high and they dont really check u they migjt move something in your bag but thats it .. they dont care ..

  12. The reason it is so popular and your thoughts of how could someone enjoy it either too much or not enough is the majority of people that use GHB at this location and others like it is using it on top of Crystal Meth or possibly xtasy or Molly and when combined creates countless sensations that alter the body and mind to think it's experiencing true euphoria or nirvana. I personally believe once someone does this either just once or a couple of times the damage is done to the brain resulting in the addiction and mindset that without using the pleasures of sexual acts and general feeling through out the body either will never compare or even be achieved with out them. Unfortunately in these environments just like bars there are those individuals who are administering GHB to people unknowingly. Addiction is a horrible and deadly reality we face that can only turn out 1 of two ways and that to me is unfortunate.

  13. It's rough hearing some of these comments as my wife worked in the same department as this guy but what can you do when the world is full of a bunch of uncaring human beings.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Um highly doubtful your wife worked in ANY department at Steamworks, since that's an all-male business. No girls allowed!!

      Delete
    2. I think the OP was referencing the deceased individual. Thus the references to working with "this guy" and rough hearing these comments as well as the uncaring individuals commenting here. You know, you may not approve of people being in the bathhouse or their battles with addiction, but this guy was someones son, and he was human being, flawed like all of us. It sure would be nice if people could put down the knives and acknowledge that a man died and just leave it there.

      Delete
    3. And I'm sure he means his wife worked with the deceased somewhere other than Steamworks.....and sorry about your loss but a 31 year old doesn't just drop dead....especially in basically a sex/drug den. You chose your own fate. These are essentially suicides if you haven't a care in the world about ingesting, snorting or injecting substances of an unknown source into your body. It's a VERY sad life that unfortunately Chicago perpetuates for them.

      Delete
    4. I knew this man and he was a kind-hearted person. He made a mistake in taking this drug but he didn't deserve to die for it. While not all of us have used drugs, all of us have done stupid/dangerous things and those of us commenting here have luckily lived to tell about it (and hopefully learned from it). He didn't get that chance. I wish with all my heart that he had. Having compassion isn't the same as condoning what happened.

      Delete
    5. Again, if you're ingesting, snorting or injecting a substance into your body of an UNKNOWN source you don't care jack shit about yourself and it equates to nothing less than a suicide. Sorry for your loss but I sincerely believe you're more concerned about the situation than the deceased himself.

      Delete
    6. And if you were smart, you'd distance yourself from people that frequent sex/drugs dens disguised as "bathhouses" or "gyms". I did (and I'm gay).

      Delete
  14. I'm reading it that he means his wife worked with the now deceased guy.

  15. I think he's referring to the guy who died, not any Steamworks employee.

    2. Yeah, yeah...me too, me too...that's the ticket. I was "unknowingly drugged." That's how I got there in the first place too...I was "unknowingly drugged." Yeah, yeah...that's the ticket.

  17. I along with many over the decades have been raped there, only to be told by management, "Well, that's why you're here." Last I checked, rape is still a crime.

With these deaths, karma happens, even to these institutions of "gay narcissism."

    ReplyDelete
  18. Some of you should be ashamed in yourself. Someone easily could have done this to him. I knew him and he was a beautiful person and this is definitely not in his character. His family and close friends are reading these... keep in mind that people mourning, with more facts than you, don't need to see your harsh judgements. He was a beautiful person, loved by sooooo many without a mean bone in his body. And so very missed by everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You all should be ashamed of yourself. Keep your harsh judgements to yourself. There's a family and tons of friends of this man in mourning and this drug is completely out of his character. He was a wonderful man, full of life, kind to everyone, and never had an enemy. Never had a bad bone in his body. RIP AND to the family, don't pay attention to any of these fools who have nothing better to do than assume they know anything about the situation.

  20. What's the name of the person who died in this incident? Anybody?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Or this person was drugged and raped. Just bc someone was found at this location does mean they went there willingly. Please have some compassion and respect for the family and friends currently grieving this very recent loss. The investigation is still underway. let's not speculate until we have all of the facts.

  22. Steam works will never ever shut down by government entities ,Way too much political connections ! Has been like that for years. Fifty or hundred or thousand people could die in there and nothing will ever be done. It's just how this city works. They will cry gay discrimination and they will be bullet proof and remain open till the end of time. I wonder how many people leave out the back door with assistance of staff because they don't like the coverage of someone sick , injured, over dosed while a patron . First and very last time I went there I saw a man "clean" his buttocks out in the jacuzzi and without being graphic that chlorinated water wasn't clear after that bio hazard looking mess . Walked out and never returned The only useful purpose of this place is that these men don't have to go do it publically at montrose bird beach where kids can observe. That's the only purpose of this place that protects us from seeing them do it publically in a bush and shrubs at the lake front or department store glory hole bathroom

    1. You could still go there and just avoid the jacuzzi, although I'm sure it has been cleaned since that incident.

And if he willingly took the drug or not, the person he was with left him there. Coward.
