Woman Shot Dead On Streeterville Sidewalk; Stray Bullet Flies Into Condo Owner's Living Room

The 500 block of East Ohio in Streeterville | Google
A 25-year-old woman was shot to death early this morning near Lake Shore Drive and Ohio Street in Streeterville. No one is in custody.

Stray bullets from the shooting flew into a nearby condo building, with one bullet becoming entangled in a second-floor resident’s living room window blinds, a witness said.

Raven Lemons of North Lawndale was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital just after 3 a.m.  About 20 minutes earlier, she was shot once in the head as she stood on a sidewalk in the 500 block of East Ohio Street near a pedestrian tunnel that goes to the lakefront, according to police and a witness.

People were seen running from the area and a white sedan—possibly a Kia Optima—with four occupants sped away.

Detectives today were searching for a known man who is believed to have fled the scene. He may have been the intended target, a source said.

Four bullet casings were found in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive. In addition to the one that killed Lemons, other bullets flew into the entrance of the 540 North Lake Shore Drive condos; the window of a furniture store; and a woman’s second-floor living room.

No one else was injured.

  1. The lakefront from Olive Park to Oak Street beach has become a no-go zone after sunset. There is little police presence and a whole lot of bad behavior in that stretch east of LSD. This incident almost certainly began east of LSD and migrated west thru the underground tunnel.

    1. That sounds logical - And as someone who lives in 60611 - it's a mess and I don't want to go near the lake after dark because of issues with people who cause disruptions and act like real jerks.

  2. Why are people out at that hour
I would not be out at that hour

    1. Working? Leaving work? On the way home from work? There are a thousand bars and restaurants in River North. They don't run themselves.

    2. Just got off 3rd shift at Walmart and the Red Line still running so why not go watch the beautiful sunrise?

  4. Soon, we'll see more private security along the beaches and LSD. We don't have enough police to cover the area after 11pm, when the parks are closed. Why are people in the parks after 11pm anyway?

    1. I live in a condo near the shooting. I'm up walking my dog around that time and Ohio st. Isn't the best place to be on a Friday or Saturday. Now that it summer I have noticed more locals are parking on Ohio St. to party and hang at the beach. If this city doesn't have enough city police, then it time to bring in the military... 200 shooting just this month!!!

  5. The Park is closed in "Theory", not reality. The whole lakefront is open and accessible after it is supposed to be closed. Unfortunately, it is also Not Policed after it closes. Some of the most beautiful areas in the City are now too dangerous to visit after dark, because of Rahm and the ACLU's mismanagement of the Chicago Police. Cops are starting to call these kills Ramicides!

  6. Why no coverage in the Chicago Tribune today?

    1. People would not tell the truth so no stories to print about the murders.

  7. The press resents the bourgeois. They somehow see crime happening as a comeuppance well deserved.

  8. The victim was from North Lawndale, an area riddled with violence just south of Garfield and Austin districts in the West Side. Pure speculation, but I would bet this was Gang/drug related and not someone working late at night at the bars in the area.. Too young, and a female so equal opportunity violence.

    1. Yep. That is pure speculation.

      She was a bartender.

    2. There is no bar there and no reason to go that way after a shift if you're trying to get home to North Lawndale. While it may be speculation, it's also not fair to discount that it may be true.

  9. Wow, 540 Lake Shore Drive - someone paid an absolute fortune to live in an apartment where a bullet flew through a window. I would imagine these poor people will have a difficult time sitting in their living room again. And RIP to the deceased. This is absolutely ridiculous. At this point, the only thing that will fix this is a huge, huge police presence - and if you read the state of city and state finances yesterday - that is not going to happen. I'm also a little worried about another factor. This year, 2017, the number of friends that I have had leave Chicago for the suburbs is worrisome. Each couple that I know (or individual) who has left were people with money in nice areas and it was due to violence, roads, crime. If any of us think that this city is too large to empty out, enjoy some nice videos of Detroit in the 1950's, 60's and early to mid-70's. I love Chicago and don't want to leave, but this is getting to the point where if you stay you put up with too much.

  10. As a resident and a witness, I can tell you this: This was a gang related shooting. The victim's Facebook page is still up. It's filled with pictures of her and her fellow gang bangers flashing gang signs (and pictures of her one year old orphaned son). The victim was not standing on a sidewalk when she was shot. She was actually killed about 50 feet inside the 600 N. LSD building. She and her fellow bangers had just closed the W Hotel at Ontario and Lake Shore, and they were walking through the enclosed driveway of that building to their parked SUV on Ohio. they were attacked by a rival gang, which likely also just left the W Hotel, from a moving vehicle on Ohio with shots fired from that vehicle to the north into the 600 N. LSD building. The victim's gang then returned fire at the vehicle (shooting to the south) and four rounds from their fire struck the 540 N. LSD building. The victim's gang friends were then seen running to a black SUV parked on Ohio just west of the scene and tearing off after the first vehicle that shot at them. There were at least four shell casing in the middle of Ohio Street from the shots fired into the 600 N LSD building, and there are four bullet holes in the 540 N. LSD building. Those two buildings are directly across Ohio Street from each other right at Lake Shore.

  11. The Hotel W on LSD caters to a bad crowd, and has been for several years.
