A 22-year-old Grand Crossing man is in custody after allegedly trying to rob a man on Boystown’s Halsted Street early Sunday.

Demeterius Tucker was arrested on the 3400 block of North Halsted around 4:30 this morning after he was identified as the person who tried to take a man’s wallet in the 800 block of West Newport, according to police.

When the 26-year-old victim resisted, Tucker punched the man in the face. Two men who tried to help the 26-year-old were also punched by Tucker, police said.

A fourth person, described by police as a 24-year-old witness, was able to detain Tucker until officers arrived moments later.

Tucker’s charged with one count of felony attempt robbery and three felony counts of aggravated battery in a public place. He is due in bond court on Monday.

  2. 3 victims total. The "fourth man" you speak of was a witness and crucial part of the investigation. He is a security guard for Walsh Security.

    1. Post the details here.
If the guy 'did the work', he deserves the credit. And this is one of the few places he'll actually get it -- because the entire mess will be ignored by every other source. .

  3. Fighting back is the only answer. The cops can't be everywhere especially when the department is thousands short of being fully staffed.. Thanks Rahm.

  4. This is my corner Newport and Halsted. I hair salon closed and criminal brats sit on all the steps around the old Jeffries hair studio. Police need to patrol the steps and remove criminals. The old store building needs to install real bright lights on every set of steps maybe even a recording device to capture these criminals.

  5. I've been thinking about the idea that I see more and more people fighting back. It's slowly starting to happen and lookout when it gains momentum.
