UPTOWN: Teen Critical After Being Shot In The Head Saturday Afternoon

A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot to the back of his head in Uptown Saturday afternoon.

The boy was near Broncho Billy Park in the 4400 block of North Magnolia when at least nine shots were fired around 4:30 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing possible suspects—including a known gang member who was shot just three months ago—running into a nearby CHA housing complex, police said.

Two men in a gray Dodge Avenger dropped the victim off at Thorek Hospital and then fled the area, police said.

The victim was transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center due to the extent of his injuries.

A witness said the boy was “talking but bleeding” when he arrived at Thorek. His Facebook page indicates that he attended a local high school as recently as last year.

Chicago police detained a person of interest about 90 minutes after the shooting. That individual was taken in for questioning.

Saturday's shooting took place about a block from where schoolchildren marched for peace just 7 hours earlier, according to a Tweet from local Alderman James Cappleman.

Heating Up

Saturday’s victim is the fourth person to be shot in Uptown since April 13.

  1. Wow, I'm thsnkful that a peace march was held. That'll fix everything. Maybe a couple prayers, too. Lol.

    1. Seriously your sarcastic and sadistic comment is not necessary . A child was shot.

    2. Truly, it is horrible that a child was shot. But prayers do nothing, Where was this great god before the child was shot? If he existed, he would have known what was to happen, and he did nothing. Think about it.

    4. The peace march was fine it was lots of different folks from the community, nobody ever said it fixes everything that would be childish to think so.

    5. I have my own, lots of doubts what works what doesn't. How much does is work...whats what?
Same criticism about public art, is it just a waste of time, sometimes it is but sometimes it isn't, with time it fades away. What can ya do.

    6. A child? No a gang member. Love by the sword die by the sword. If your heart is so large please start preaching and changing these savage killers

  2. For what is worth, on Friday I was in a taxi at intersection of Montrose and Hazel at around 5:45PM when about 5-7 shots rang out at Agatite and Hazel. There were about 6-10 kids that i saw running from that corner as i dove to floor of my cab. I have not seen other reports of this so I assume no one was shot but this is not far from Saturday shooting.

    1. I was biking on Clarendon around that time. A bunch of people ran into the park before two cops sped by me. I almost hit one of them when they ran in front of me. (prob still spooked by the shots)

  3. Good luck getting any attention to this gang war going on in Uptown. It's going to get much worse until the CPD determines Uptown to be a statistical threat to the Southside war zone numbers.
