Gang Member Shot Outside Lincoln Park School Tuesday

A 25-year-old man was shot in the leg outside of Cardinal Bernardin Early Childhood Center in Lincoln Park on Tuesday evening.

It was the second shooting in that immediate area since Monday.

Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of a black vehicle and open fire outside of the school on Paulina at Diversey around 5:35 p.m. He then returned to the car and fled, witnesses said.

Two hours later, the victim—identified by a source as a documented gang member—walked into Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his left leg. The man, who is in good condition, told police that he was walking near the 1600 block of West Diversey when he heard shots and felt pain.

Parents were picking up their children from Cardinal Bernardin at the time of the shooting, according to a witness. No children were injured.

Police found gunshot damage to church property, and they recovered shell casings in the 2700 block of North Paulina. Nearby residents have been asked to provide surveillance video feeds to police.

Early Monday morning, a 24-year-old gang member was grazed in the face after someone in a passing car opened fire on him in the 2000 block of West Diversey, less than a half-mile west of Tuesday’s incident.

  1. Anyone know what gang this is or why these gang members are in this neighborhood?

    1. Maybe it's because their parents and their aunts and uncles are.

  2. Am I wrong in thinking that these are areas that never had shootings in the past? I mean I know it gets its share of armed robberies but I can't remember gang shootings happening like this in the decade plus that I've lived there. I mean it's a busy area in Lincoln Park at 5pm.

  3. Once again proving that Chicago does not have a "gun" problem, or a "violence" problem, or a "community" problem -- it has a GANG problem, period. Long past time for a joint state/federal RICO sweep. By definition, any and all members of street gangs are engaged in an organized criminal enterprise -- way past time for a massive sweep.

    1. Looks like the swamp is going to be drained soon. Those sanctuary city funds are gonna run dry.....

    2. I agree. Didn't Anita Alvarez run (years ago) with a campaign promise to use RICO to lock away the gang bangers? That is the only thing that will stop the violence in Chicago....lock them away for good.

Meanwhile, I'm guessing that a dozen or more families who live in the area or whose kids attend that preschool are contacting a real estate agent.....

  4. Anita Alvarez did promise that and never delivered. The great NYC uses the RICO act on higher weight drug offenders. They also have used the "quality of life crime" to reduce the mayhem. I always felt much safer taking the MTA subway then the red line late at night.

  5. We just left Lakeview and moved to Holland. Somehow I think this European lifestyle as an expat is going to sit too well for us to ever move back to Chicago (the city). Appears very safe here and the people are tall and good looking!

    1. Yeah -- you're lucky! Sadly most of us don't have the opportunity to be an expat in Europe or Asia!

    2. Yeah -- but look at the upside.
More people moving to Holland means cheaper housing for you. It's bonus for the aldergoof as well -- "Look what great job I've done keeping a lid on rents!" ;))
