Three juveniles are in custody following an armed carjacking in Lincoln Park on Monday evening, police said.

Now, detectives are working to determine if the three are responsible for a series of armed robberies that was the focus of a community alert last week.

Just after 8 o’clock Monday night, three men approached their victim in front of his home in the 900 block of West Wrightwood. One of the robbers pulled out a silver semi-automatic handgun and demanded the man’s phone and his Volvo SUV.

Working with Volvo's OnStar-like service, police tracked the vehicle to the West Side Austin neighborhood.

The driver crashed the stolen SUV into another car, and all three occupants ran from the scene as police closed in around 8:30 p.m.

Officers found the three suspects hiding in a yard about 20 minutes later in the 500 block of North Central.

Charges are expected to be filed on Tuesday.

A Break?

Area North investigators last week issued a community alert to warn residents of Lakeview and Uptown about a series of armed robberies committed by a group of 3 or 4 young black men armed with a silver handgun.

Detectives said one of the five robberies in the alert was a carjacking and CWB Chicago independently reported that investigators believed another incident on the list was an attempted carjacking that failed to materialize.

  1. The helicopter(and Volvo) played a significant role in this arrest. Its very hard to hide from flir infrared. 015 tac did a great job, armed robberies and vehicular hijackings are some of the few crimes where the Police are still allowed to be the Police.

  2. That is the second car jacking in the last few months near that location, the corner of Wrightwood/Halsted had one at 5:00 p.m. on a Sunday a few months ago. The little grocery store on Wrightwood/Halsted was just held up at gun point a few weeks ago. I wonder why?

  4. Im surprised cops cooperated with the tracking system. That's some progress right there. Obviously they weren't overburdened at the time.

    2. Tracking stolen cars via manufacturer's devices is NOT a priority in most major cities, especially Chicago! FACT! And F.U.

  5. Police officers from all districts involved worked very quickly to bring these guys to justice, unfortunately, they are minors which means they will have little to no consequences for their actions. @tonipreckwinkle, why is it that a 17 year old can rob someone at gunpoint with few consequences as a juvenile and 12 months later they get 9 years? How quickly do you think you can rehabilitate these young men before they are a threat to society again? Perhaps, you should do the adult time on their behalf.

  7. The paint job on that pink house is horrid. People with bad taste should be banned from buying paint. If Ryan Handzel was a house, he would look like that.

  12. The democratic system of it can all come for free somehow spread into the judicial system and they walk out. And repeat. And walk out. Enough.

  13. For those of us who aren't in law enforcement, what is the usual procedure if a juvenile is convicted of such a crime? Is there any juvenile detention, or are they typically released to their "parents" after the court date? Do we really expect to see these kids out on the streets again soon, or is that just talk? Thanks CWB!

    1. Here is an article that gives a high level overview of the new laws governing juveniles. It is absolutely possible for them to already be back on the streets.

    1. Because when there are tough gun laws, only criminals have guns. Democrats do not seem to be able to understand this fact.
