Burglaries Soar 116% (And City Says It's YOUR Fault!)

Image: TelegraphUK
A 92-year-old Lake View woman has become one of the latest additions to the North Side’s ever-growing list of burglary victims.

The woman answered her front door Friday afternoon to speak with a man who claimed to be a utility worker. The “worker” entered the front while his partner entered the back and stole "a large sum of money" from the woman. Both men then fled.

An acquaintance tells us that the woman was not injured in the incident.

A Year To Forget

Through August 6, reported break-ins are:
• up 116% in Wrigleyville and Boystown (138 cases this year vs. 64 last)
• up 116% in Lake View (281 vs. 130)
• up 54% in Lincoln Park (169 vs. 110)
• up 57% across the 19th police district
• up 9.3% citywide
Of the nearby community areas, only Uptown has seen a decrease in burglaries this year, with 63 cases compared to 67 last year.

It’s Your Fault

A community policing officer at a recent neighborhood meeting blamed the burglary increase on residents who leave their windows and doors unlocked.

But, when an audience member pointed out the obvious—that it seems more likely that there are 100% more criminals in the area than 100% more people leaving doors and windows unlocked—the officer had little to offer.

Do you open your windows to let in a breeze during summer? Well, in the world of police statistics, if a burglar crawls through one of those windows while you’re sleeping that counts as “leaving a window or door open.” (Just ask the folks who got burglarized overnight Friday in the 3800 block of N. Paulina about that. They probably didn’t know that they weren’t allowed to let fresh air into their home during the summertime.)

Do you have a window A/C unit? Guess what? If a burglar pushes the unit into your home and crawls through the window, that is also considered “leaving a window or door open.” (Ask the poor sap whose house was burglarized that way on Tuesday in the 800 block of W. Cuyler.)

PS—Later in the neighborhood meeting, the CAPS officer did volunteer to go on a bike ride with a resident, so there's that. Here at CWB, we'd still prefer that the entire CAPS program be disbanded and every one of its officers re-assigned to do something useful. Like looking for burglars instead of going on feel good bike rides.

Sightings

At least two Boystown residents caught glimpses of men who tried to break into their homes last week.

• A woman told police that a man crashed through her back door around 9PM on Wednesday in the 800 block of W. Roscoe. The offender, described as a black man in a red t-shirt, saw the woman, screamed “Oh! Crap!” and fled the scene.

• A tenant in the 800 block of W. Buckingham called police after an unknown person broke into their home around 12:30AM last Saturday. The offender fled without taking anything.

  1. There are also post Roaring 20s methods to properly and securely install a window air conditioner. Using a discarded Jiffy Pop popcorn tin to fill in the window void like my fancy condo "owner" neighbors in the 3100 block of Pine Grove did back in 2010. I was just a lowly stupid renter there though....next door to the 40 year single family home Lakeview East senior residents that were beaten with bats during a home invasion. This is one instance where I'll border on blaming the aware/progressive victim and side with the cops advice.

    1. As a cop I would never blame a victim for a crime and I don't know many that would. At the end of the day, wether naive or not, a victim is just thay...a victim. No one has the right to victimize the innocent regardless of how our liberal court system rules. I try to tell people how to make themselves a harder target to prevent being victims in the first place but that is often met with hostility so I just bite my tongue now and listen, let people vent and tell me how much we suck.

    2. Thank you officer for your mature and sensible attitude.
As far as the second part of your comment goes, I am sorry. Anyone who blames all beat cops for the state of law enforcement in this city is a monumental ignoramus. Sadly, there's no short supply of those.
Security is a service, not a right. Too bad that those who influence the management of that service - the mayor, the associated politicians, and to some important extent the union and the citizens, do such a piss-poor job of managing the resources.

  2. P.S. We know you're trying to save a nickel to spend at Showtunes or in some bad BBQ but at least make it LOOK like you tried installing that window A/C with an ounce of sense.

  5. Someone with some extra money should open up three security shops in 19. That list was insane and Chicago's mayor lives in the thick of things and acts like he lives in Door county Wisconsin. Stand up people. That mayor is a joke.

  6. Mr. Mayor some residents who live close to you are saying that you are more scared to take on this crime situation then a baby rabbit would be. How would you like to respond to that? "This crime wave will not be tolerated." Thank you mayor Cottontail.

  8. I have tried a few home improvement stores in the local area for window guards. I have called a few fence companies and they don't seem to want to guard windows. We need information for the many windows we need to bar up in the neighborhood.

    1. There are shatterproof Windows that look good. They're rather pricey but not as unsightly as bars. Also, iron work is very expensive. Something to look into

  10. Rahm needs to just resign. I always said no one could do worse than Daley but now we've reached a new low!

Your great grandmother isn't even safe in her home anymore... Maybe if Rahm freed up a few of those cars guarding him and his family CPD might be able to do their jobs .....just saying

  16. Maybe because police aren't available to us? I read SecondCityCop almost daily, and few posts are as scary as the comments on this one: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=13350456&postID=5354570930373938708 ... In sum, many CPD districts are down quite a few beat cars daily. This includes our own district. Can you do some digging? This is staggering and scary.

Dear CWB -- Do you guys not know that any criticism of this type involving 'what you are told by the police' is grossly insensitive, insulting and anti-law-enforcement!!! Really. It is.
