Man Shot In Park Near Addison & Lake Shore Drive

A 19-year-old man is in good condition after being shot in the leg near the tennis courts at 3651 N. Recreation Drive as he enjoyed Saturday's warm weather with his wife and child, police said. No one is in custody.

One round from the shooting flew across Lake Shore Drive and into the 35th floor apartment of an 86-year-old man. The man—said to be “startled” by the notion of being nearly shot in his own living room—was transported by ambulance for observation. He was not shot.

According to the shooting victim, his family was enjoying the park shortly before 10PM when a group of four young Hispanic men approached, “began saying gang stuff” and then opened fire. The four were last seen fleeing the area in an older model gray Nissan.

Witnesses reported seeing a trail of the victim’s blood stretch from one end of the tennis courts to the other.

The shooting victim’s wife drove him to Weiss Hospital in Uptown where he is being treated for a through-and-through gunshot wound to his left thigh, police said.

As CWB Chicago has frequently reported, the lakefront around Recreation Drive is a popular hangout for largely Hispanic street gangs. The nearby seawall is routinely covered in tags by rival gangs and reports of gunfire are relatively common in the area. Two men were shot there in a gang-related incident on July 6, 2014.

  1. That's across LSS from me...on the North side...at 10 pm...an 86 year old man can't sit in his high rise condo without fear of getting shot.

Wtf are you doing Rahm? Tunney? Cappleman? The only up side is that this story will likely be on the news since there's a shooting victim. Shame and embarrass the officials into cleaning up this war zone of a city. The north side is officially turning into the south side.

    1. Senator Dick Durbin lives about 200 feet from the condo window that got shot.
I wonder what would have happened if it was Durbin's window that got shot.
Durbin probably would have moved to a safer neighborhood.
I wonder if Durbin even cares about the giant increase in crime/gun violence in Chicago.

    2. Dear Anonymous, There's nothing that Rahm or anybody can do because of the 2nd amendment. Want to do something - how about repealing or modifying the 2nd amendment? How about stopping the guns from coming across the border from Indiana? How about collecting a database on automatic rifle owners? Don't blame the mayor, he's like you. He wants the gun violence to stop too, but his hands are tied.
Just get used to more guns and gun play.

    3. Automatic weapons are not legal to own. So, that would be an interesting list. You might want to share it with the police..

    1. And why can't the police arrest people who are in the park after 11 pm? Why is that regulation not enforced???

  4. Glad my son's soccer practice is over for the season, we practice on the fields. If I look at a gang banger wrong or 4 losers happen to drive by when I am loading up the car with the goals do I get to be gunned down in from of my kid. CPD needs to take back our parks and crush these gangs.

    1. The gang signs should be scrubbed away. Is the city still erasing graffiti? And how the heck is it the Spanish gangs choose THAT park area?

  7. Time to raise income taxes to pay for more police.
In NYC and L.A. everyone with a job pays a much higher tax rate than Chicagoans, and the wealthiest pay around 13%. That's compared to our 3.75%

    2. WRONG!
No just that, but WAY WRONG!
Thanks for trying there Rahm Tunney Madigan.
Total non-federal tax burden on a middle income family is about:
      NYC: 14.25%
      CHI: 12.0%
      LA: 10.5%

If you're going to flat-out lie about something, at least try to make it believable.

    3. You are so naïve. They just announced our property taxes will go up 13%. I doubt the money will be used for hiring policemen. The extra income generated by this tax will probably be stolen or mismanaged by our duly elected representatives in office, as usual.

    4. When I lived in NYC right after college, my income tax rate was 10%.
I earn a lot more now in Chicago, and my income tax rate is 3.75%.

This is not hard. Income tax is only part of your local tax burden. Not all of it, PART of it.
There is property tax (just hiked by 13%) and sales tax (the highest in the nation), and a whole variety of business taxes (hidden as licensing fees) etc etc etc.
You pay ALL of those taxes. Yes, even if you rent, you will indirectly pay property tax. So...add them all up.
Google might be useful for you.
The non-federal tax burden on a middle income Chicago resident about 12%.
      Got it Rahm Tunney Madigan?

  9. We used to own a single-family home just blocks from the tennis courts, running path, recreation drive - and we always thought it was so great to live in a true city and be able to walk to a golf course and run along the lake. Unfortunately gang members like the area as well and they are pretty brazen about firing their pistolas. Needless to say, we sold last year and moved to Singapore - and even though it's a bit 'sterile', it's SO SAFE!

    1. How you going to do that? Guns WERE banned in Chicago until about 2 years ago when the courts overturned all gun control measures.

  13. Guns should be banned in Chicago? On your best day of day-dreaming, do you really believe that? Anyone who thinks banning guns is the answer is someone who does not lend themselves to critical thinking. Attention!! Guns are already here and bad people don't have a momentary lapse in their line of thinking it's ok, no, it's cool to go shred some folks for fun. Where's Charles Bronson when you need him? Fight back Chicago. Take your streets back from these killers, dealers and thieves.

  14. So Sunday morning Rahm went for a run, I saw him just north of there on the trail, with his usual smug smile on his face. Was he out there for a photo op or to clean up the blood himself? I'm sure he told reporters later "the city is perfectly safe." But we all know this city is a hellhole.

  15. I live on Lake Shore Drive almost right across. The entire area is now a gang hangout. The steps at the water are unsafe, the bird sanctuary is completely unsafe (now for the second year). You would have to be insane to use the restroom in the field house. Can they not put cops in the park? That's the whole reason I pay for my apartment is to live on the harbor across from the park and now that is even ruined.

      No, we did not.
