#59: Woman Mugged, Off-Duty Cop Fires Shot

One shot was fired by an off-duty Chicago police officer after two men robbed a woman following last night’s Cubs game and then attacked him.

No one was shot. Both offenders are in custody.

The woman was near the intersection of Grace and Kenmore when she was mugged around 10:40PM, according to a witness. The off-duty officer intervened and fired a single shot when the men turned on him.

Both suspects were immediately taken into custody.

Last night’s robbery was the 59th to be reported in the Wrigleyville and Boystown area this year. Muggings here are up 136% compared to the same time last year.

Elsewhere…

• A man brandished a knife and robbed a local pharmacy of liquor on Friday.

The offender entered CVS Pharmacy at the Century Mall at 9:20AM, threatened staff members with the knife, grabbed 3 bottles of booze, and fled northbound on Clark Street, according to a witness.

He is described as black, bald, in his mid-40’s, and about 6-feet tall. He wore a black leather jacket, dark jeans, and white tennis shoes.

  1. It's interesting when an off-duty cop or civilian is lauded when they fire a gun and "save the day" but an on-duty cop firing a gun results in multi-million dollar lawsuits.

  2. Thankfully no one was hurt and the Officer saved the day. I just can't believe how brazen these criminals are these days. I guess knowing that you will just get a slap on the wrist is not much of a deterrent.

  3. Did anyone else here the. Gunfire? I live by Buena and Kenmore and I initially heard one distinct gun shot and then 3 more in a row about 5 seconds later and then another single shot a few seconds later. I could be off on the exact number but I know I heard more than 2 and less than 7. So just wondering what I heard. Glad no one was shot.

    1. Yes. We live near Fremont and Bradley and heard at least 6 bangs that sounded like shots..

  4. It's funny, the Trib has an article mentioning that this event occurred but nothing about the particulars (or the fact that the perps have been apprehended).

    1. Funny? More like pathetic and irresponsible. What is their purpose if not to report the actual news? Not to mention actually investigate it. Skewing events is neither. They lost my respect some time ago.
When it comes to accurate and unbiased crime investigating and reporting, there is no one who lives up to CWB. We are so lucky to have them! Thank you, guys!

    1. Tom said that there will be no scalpers around Wrigley Field before the games. Nothing about the robbers after the game ? Now lets see - robberies are up 136% since January. Are there any numbers for the decrease in scalping ? LOL Tom? Tom? Will these numbers be mentioned in your next feel good e-mail blast?

    2. Hell no. Do you think he is going to make himself look bad? Remember - crime is down.

  7. No scalpers around Wrigley? I was at the game yesterday waiting to cross Clark and a guy right on the corner selling peanuts was scalping. Then before the changed another one came up trying to sell me tickets. Scalping tickets is the least of the worries we now face in Wrigley/Lakeview!
