Gunman Carjacks Uber Driver In Lakeview Monday Evening

A Chicago police officer examines the abandoned vehicle near Belmont and Lake Shore Drive.
An Uber and Lyft driver was carjacked at gunpoint near the intersection of Sheridan and Pine Grove Monday evening. Police found the woman's vehicle abandoned in traffic near Belmont and Lake Shore Drive minutes later. No one was hurt.

Crime scene tape wraps the vehicle.
Several witnesses reported seeing a man jump out of a vehicle and forcibly take the victim's black Honda around 8:30PM. Both cars sped off, leaving the 35-year-old woman standing in the middle of the street, police said.

Less than five minutes later, officers found the car sitting in a southbound lane of Inner Lake Shore Drive, just north of Belmont Avenue. Incredibly, the victim's purse was still inside of the car.

The gunman is described as a 6-foot-tall black man in his mid-20's who wore a black jacket and a black hat.

  1. That's why I quit driving for them. The rates, which don't even pay for your gas or time (nevermind the abusive/violent wear and tear on your vehicle), the unappreciative/non-tipping/snot clientele.......and the risk of this. They will run out of drivers. Enjoy the service and those cheap rates while you can!

    1. It sounds like your attitude is the cause of your failure as a Uber driver. Some people should never have a job where interaction with customers is required. I am very successful at it and have never experienced any "unappreciative/non-tipping/snot clientele." Quite the opposite...I enjoy meeting the riders and make a good living at it.

    2. And if you think you're making a "good living" driving for Uber, they've got you right where they want you. Do the math.

    3. I thought tipping was included. Part of why Uber is so easy is we don't need cash. Right? or am I just stiffing every Uber driver I have ever used?

    4. Don't like Uber?
Don't want to drive for them?
      Then don't.
Not like it's too complicated there, pal.

    5. You're effing every Uber driver you've ever used by not tipping. Uber discourages tipping to thwart regulations because they are a "technology company", not a "transportation company".

P.S. I no longer drive for Uber. It was taken as a temporary solution which is all it should be for anybody considering driving for them. It's nothing but a cash advance on the actual cash value of your car. If you can't figure that out from day one with them, I wish you only the best in your endeavors. The turnover in drivers is astronomical hence the constant service complaints.

  2. Can't even drive safely around Lakeview at 8:30!. My rent was huge when I lived there, hopefully it has dropped for those who dare to stay.

  3. Bunch of robberies of Uber drivers downtown. Robbers reach into the driver side and snatch the drivers' cell phones, most of which are mounted on the dash.

    1. The phones mounted on the dash are likely the ones provided to the driver's by Uber.

    2. Uber charges $10/week (probably more now) to use their "devices". Most drivers have their own smart phones to run the Uber app now. That Uber "phone" would be absolutely useless to anyone other than a driver. It is technically an iphone but only runs their app.
