A GOON & A GUN: Feds Charge "Uptown Beach Bandit"

Federal investigators have now identified 45-year-old Cynthia Wonsey of Edgewater as the woman they believe to be the "Uptown Beach Bandit" bank robber.

Wonsey is charged with one count of bank robbery in connection with the hold-up of a TCF Bank branch in Boystown on August 5.

She is also suspected of robbing two other TCF Banks on the North Side last month.

Prosecutors say Wonsey approached the TCF Bank counter inside of the Jewel-Osco store at 3531 N. Broadway and tossed a demand note at the teller:
"Give me all your $100s $50s and $20's. I DO HAVE A GUN and I have a goon watching from the other aisle and HE HAS A GUN. So don't press any buttons put it in the envelope and nobody gets hurt! Now! And don't move for five mins after I leave. Look you are being watched! 30 Seconds."
Wonsey fled with $553 cash and a tracking device that malfunctioned.

Two acquaintances of Wonsey called the FBI after seeing published photos of the bank robbery suspect.

CWB Chicago first reported the arrest of a suspect in the case on Saturday morning.

  1. Bwa ha ha. Her acquaintances squealed on her. Love it. And JUST at that precise split second when she no doubt decided to begin turning her life around ...

My thoughts exactly. Who on earth would risk SERIOUS prison time for such a small amount???

  2. Rahmbo must be so disappointed. He can't downgrade this nor remove it from his crime metrics.

  5. Well finally! Nice to see Miss Brazen get caught. Whoever she torqued off enough to turn her in must be enjoying some supreme schadenfreud today .. must've been a doozy.

Thank God .. there's more media reporting on Lakeview crime. Thank you, WGNTV, for your much needed reporting tonight on the increased crime in Lakeview, particularly the violent attacks this weekend! Was wondering if they onsulted with you all here for background and some details. Thanks a million for all you all do here.

Several armed robberies reported in Lakeview

Pity, the naivete of that one gal who believes because there's always people around she's immune. And hopefully the meet and greet *tomorrow* by CPD at Belmont and Shefflied will open folks' eyes .. and get MORE CPD officers faster. Would be nice to know what time this is to occur. BTW, I don't know what difference it makes if the 2 crimes are connected before issuing a Community Alert. Incidents of violent crime .. and as we know growing violent crime .. are enough.

    1. "There's always people around" is a hoot. Unfortunately, I'd never help a damsel in distress again as it cost me 3 days off of work. I'll call 911 though (but we know how well that works).

Who am I to assume what caused the situation anyway? She could have been "exchanging words" with them as the cops tried to accuse me of.

  6. She's the only bank robber I've ever seen who looks like she has a stocking over her face without actually having put one on.
