EASTBOUND & DOWN: Arrests Return To Center On Halsted

Image: Beeradelphia
Things have been relatively quiet around the armed-guard-protected Center on Halsted recently. That has changed, with at least three arrests being reported at the 3656 N. Halsted address since Wednesday afternoon.
• A man was arrested for assault at 1:50PM Wednesday after "threatening a patron inside."
• Two were taken into custody for reasons yet to be determined at 3:23PM yesterday. The unit making the arrests very quickly became involved in a foot pursuit involving a third man who ran east on Waveland and then jackrabbitted across 8 lanes of Lake Shore Drive traffic into the park.
The runner was taken into custody after executing a poor attempt to look like a patch of grass near the park clock tower.
We are working to get further details on Thursday's cases.

  1. While all of us who regularly keep up with the great community resource rightfully call out the obvious decline in safety in all the area neighborhoods, there are those who sometimes go overboard with suggestions that Boystown and Wrigleyville are one step away from tumbleweed.

If that is the case, why have we seen a third long-time gay-themed establishment be sold by its' long-time owner to a more than happy to buy owner? First Spin, then Gay Mart and this week Little Jim's. All these owners found willing buyers.

So while it is true that these areas are not what they were even a few years ago, successful businesspeople see hope and not tumbleweed, or they wouldn't be making the investments they are making in the neighborhood.

    1. Not really sure what that means?

Do people have to live near their investments? Or do people in Lake Forest want to lose money on their investments?

Maybe you could explain what you mean because it really makes no sense at all and just sounds like a sarcastic pointless comment....of course, I may be missing your point, too.

    2. If putting bars in place of old bars counts (and, yep, a store that sells to people roaming between bars) for "investment", then yes. i live in this area, and see the neighborhood through a different lens than a (likely absentee) bar owner, and i for one would be fine if those storefronts stayed empty. and yes, i was here before the strip was such a replica of division street, so i am grandfathered into the right for a decent hood.

    3. Not really sure what that means?

What is means is that the investors live comfortably in their safe and posh suburbs, and have no clue what is actually going on in the area. Or if they do know, they certainly don't care. They themselves won't become a victim, they will just rake in the dough while their ignorant patrons take the fall and continue to get mugged, beaten, or worse. Sad, but true, and very, very obvious to most people who are paying attention to what is happening to our neighborhood.

  3. What I mean is most people who own businessess in Boystown don't live here. They live further north or west of the area. Just like the majority of Center on Halsted employees don't live within a block of the Center, people may get a nice income off of Boystown, but they sure as hell aren't going to LIVE in Boystown.

    1. The actual workers for those businesses and the CoH sure as hell can't AFFORD to live in Boystown.

  4. It doesn't matter where you live if you own a business or work in certain area you are still a stakeholder and don't want crime and to be afraid to travel to and from your business, properties or jobs. Business peoples hands are tied by our Mayor, The Alderman and out Police Superintendent. No one crosses Rahm or he will come after you. Most people voted for him so they got what they deserved and he will probably win again. People that took the time to vet Rahm knew what he was like. Heck he said F you to Karen Lewis. He is garbage pure and simple. Keep voting for those politicians us GLBT think are for us and this is what you get. Other minority races do it too. How is that all working out? In Englewood etc?

    1. Maybe if some of the business owners admitted there was a problem years ago and were honest with their loyal clientele they wouldn't be suffering like they are now (and I know they are for fact). As far as we've progressed to be patronized by what should be "our own". Pitiful.

    2. The GLBT community are like lemmings when it comes to voting.
Without any basis in fact, many in the community financially supported and voted for Rahm in 2011. Some engaged in a pathetic, pandering public endorsement of Rahm that was held at the CoH.
What did they get in return?
Rahm dismissed the Mayor's Liaison to the gay community.
Rahm abolished the LGBT Advisory Council.
Rahm ended City support for the City's Salute to LGBT Veterans - the only such event in the county.
Rahm ended City support for the Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame.
Rahm's disdain and discomfort at his first HoF ceremony was palatable and he ran out as fast as he could, chastising a staffer for wasting his time.
And yet, Rahm had/has the cojones to ride in the Pride Parade! WTF?
Rahm was, is, and will remain a prick who has no interest in anything that doesn't benefit him personally. Oh, but he likes gay financial contributions.
Now, don't get me started on Hillary and the gay community. The gays are in her hip pocket for unknown reasons although only came around to tolerating equal marriage in 2013. And her loyalty lies squarely in Wall Street.
Our best hope lies with Elizabeth Warren and Toni Preckwinkle.

  5. Our only hope is having a candidate run against the devil that Karen Lewis supports (oh it makes me cringe to even type that out). She's the only person in the world that's not afraid to kick Rahm's butt in the political arena.

    1. Speaking of challengers...Check out Amara Enyia. I cannot speak to her political savvy, but I did spend 4 years in journalism with her and she's incredibly hard working, honest and collaborative. (So of course she's got no $ to campaign) Still, she's doing more than most of us. Not even trying to plug; I haven't seen her in many years. I just thought our little community here might be interested!
