NEARBY: 3 Small Fires Overnight Under Investigation

Three fires broke out within 20 minutes overnight in alleys to our north. All three fires were bonafide, but only one caused damage to structure. The police department's bomb and arson unit is investigating at least one of the incidents.

At 4:27AM, a dumpster fire was reported and confirmed by police at Clark and Southport.

Ten minutes later, a couch was found on fire in the alley at 4500 Clark.

And seven minutes after that, another dumpster was found ablaze in the 4000 block of Southport. In this case, the fire caused some damage to a nearby porch.

The Southport incident has been initially classified as "non-criminal damage to property by fire" in CPD case HX272864.

Sidenote

CWB has received confirmation of a robbery that took place around 12:45 last Friday morning on the northeast corner of Addison and Broadway.

At the time, a witness called 911 to report that a man had been robbed of his cell phone in the area, but that the victim had left the scene. We did not report the incident because it could not be confirmed.

New information now shows that the victim did eventually file a report in the matter, which is classified as a strong arm robbery in case HX264030.

Through May 16, robberies in Wrigleyville and Boystown are exactly on-pace for the month when compared to May 2013. Robberies are down year-to-date, due in large part to a sharp drop during the extremely cold January - February period.

  1. Four squad cars with two "youths" on the sidewalk at about 6:30 this morning on Addison just east of Leavitt.

    1. According to CPD, 12:45AM, which is in line with the witness' 911 call at 12:41AM. Thank you for asking. We'll add that info the report.

    2. Sorry for the off topic post but I need to vent... Has anyone in the local media taken note of the condition of the streets of Chicago??? ANYONE? How does this mayor get to work in the morning? If I were his driver I would make sure to hit every pothole I could (and it wouldn't be hard). Chicago streets now resemble the moon! Rats are running everywhere, graffiti is all over the place, streetlights are out, the police, fire and schools are underfunded... All while this mayor pays for one pet project after another! New park? Sure here is 55 million. DePaul needs a new stadium? How about 50-75 million for that? New road into Chinatown? Here 62 million! Obama needs a library? How about 100 million?

Rahm has succeeded in doing one thing that I thought was impossible... He makes me miss the managerial skills of Richard Daley... I knew he was stealing from us, but at least the infrastructure was decent....

    3. I moved out of the city in 2011, and when I drive back, I, too am staggered by the amount of potholes in the city. I know this winter was one of the nastiest ever, but, man. Some of the potholes are downright nasty... side streets especially... Worse than I ever remember it in my 15 years in Chicago.

Who did these reports are the new?
    Who approved them?

  4. With the warmer weather, I also have noticed a great increase in the amount of rats in alleys. Many people do not properly close their garbage and this contributes to these nasty and dangerous animals.

    1. Thank you! Keeping up with those changes is a real headache. We could use an aspirin (or at least some white out!). I will leave a post it so the rest of the crew knows.

  7. Does anyone know what ever became of Alderman Tunney's Super Fantastic Crime Task Force Committee? That was a con job.

    1. The committee is working closely with the police department. Didn't you get the memo?

    2. And Alderman Tunney (as usual) is working closely with them, too. Cough cough!

    3. Michael, I laughed out loud when I read your question. I had almost forgotten about that infamous Crime Committee. (I'm sure that was the hope so thanks for reminding me). Sad and sick.

Who is in charge around here? Certainly not Tunney. And Rahm has his own agenda that doesn't include the north side of Chicago (except when campaign money is of concern). Almost anyone could do a better job than these egocentrics.

Is ANYONE running against Tom Tunney and Rahm Emmanuel? (Not including Mark Thomas). If so, please unveil yourselves.

    4. There's a guy who runs a business on Halsted who supposedly has been approached about running. He'd be great (I know him) but he's reluctant because of the way the upper echelons (Rahm, cough-cough) treat the aldermen (in some cases) and tell them what to do, how to vote, etc.

  8. It was LVCC's crime task force, not Alderman Tunney's. Not sure what happened to it

  9. ...and let's not forget, there are members of the Committee who have called the people behind this blog "liars" and "cowards."

    1. Look no further than the LVCC's own crime survey from 2010. Apparently the respondents were "lying" about their crime concerns 4 years ago. Those cowards.
