WEEKEND NOTES: DePaul Robbery; TBOX Learns

The 18th district recorded yet another robbery near DePaul University this morning. Witnesses reported a victim on the ground with offenders going through his book bag. The robbers, described only as two black men, got into an occupied gray Chrysler and fled eastbound on Fullerton from Lincoln Avenue around 3:15AM. CPD case #HW571335.

Pine Grove Scare
A woman in the 3900 block of Pine Grove awoke to find an unknown man in her bedroom just before 6 o'clock this morning. The victim screamed and the offender fled in an unknown direction. The event happened too quickly for the woman to get a description. It does not appear that a report was taken.

TBOX In A Nutshell
TBOX, the thousands-person-strong bar crawl that came under fire after creating havoc in the neighborhood last year, staged a much mellower event this weekend.

A reader comment sums up our feelings on the turn-around quite well:
Sounds like a good example of what 'should' occur more often. An event got out of hand, the organization running it gets the backlash from the neighborhood businesses and residents, and responds. This year's TBOX was half the size and the org funded additional security at each location. TBOX feared getting shut down, so they acted. Seems like other neighborhood groups don't have that same fear...
Changing of The Guard At BYC
The Broadway Youth Center's executive director stepped down on Friday. The youth services center is continuing to seek neighborhood approval to operate on a residential section of Wellington Avenue, as reported by Matt Simonette.

And Finally…
Police were called to a retirement community in the 3900 block of N. Clark at 12:40PM Saturday. Two senior citizens were "fighting in the cafeteria over a cane." Peace was restored.

    1. Tom Elliott is "confident" the paddy wagons must have shown up at the wrong address.

    2. Why did they have to have multiple wagons when they could have just used that CPD BUS they had parked at Halsted/Roscoe a while ago? COH needs some good PR and a reality check too.

  2. If you read the comments on DNAinfo, that Lara Brooks blew off her comments of labeling the area racist, homophobic, classist, etc as something that you "read in a blog" and one of those SELVN members called out that they received that message via her work email address. I'm sure she was shown the door.

Keep up the good work in questioning the relevance and agendas of these social service agencies.

    1. I'm the person who left the comment on dnainfo about Lara Brooks and the SELVN meeting (I am not, however, a member of SELVN). To her credit, the President of SELVN addressed Brooks' remarks at the very beginning of the meeting saying such language had no place in the discussion over the BYC's zoning issue. I was then disappointed when she attributed Lara Brooks' words to a comment someone posted on a blog. When I got my moment at the microphone I corrected her and rightfully placed the blame where it belonged...on the director of the Broadway Youth Center who sent a letter to supporters from her official business email account to encourage people to show up for the SELVN meeting. Lara Brooks deliberately used inflammatory and slanderous language aimed at the homeowners, residents and tax payers of this neighborhood to deflect attention away from the very real and legitimate concerns those people have about crime and safety issues connected to her organization. I reminded Alderman Tunney that the ugly and slanderous language was used against his constituents...the people who vote. I asked him to reject Lara Brooks' letter and to repudiate her in person as she was present. He chose to remain silent.

BYC, Alderman Tunney and DFSS have schemed up a "good neighbor agreement" that would be attached to the BYC's zoning request as a way to mollify the residents. As a good neighbor agreement is virtually unenforceable, and this whole effort is really nothing but a bait and switch to fool the concerned neighbors. I think the residents who live in the area of BYC should look nor further than Lara Brooks' letter and her opinion of them to understand what type of neighbor BYC is.

I have no doubt that Lara Brooks got the boot because her ugly little stunt got exposed and thrown down at the Alderman's feet. She might be gone, but her boss remained an apologist for her later in the SELVN meeting, and Tunney never made any statement about the offensive letter. Lara Brooks might be gone, but nothing has changed.

  3. Per Windy City Times Comcast just gave COH 45K. What a scam.

    1. It's for their "Cyber Center". Along with Microsoft Word, they are going to teach them how to set up a blog and use Twitter. Look out!

    1. Cockroaches have also evolved to withstand all temperatures while scurrying off into the dark upon being discovered.

    2. I'm surprised about that myself. No fear of the hawk!

    3. I am surprised they don't have a fake id/identity theft class. But in all seriousness Comcast should have given the money to Chicago Public Schools. I can't imagine COH using the money wisely and can only imagine the clients that will use the classes.

  5. Off topic but info I think the neighborhood needs to know. Earlier someone posted that there are 8 openings in the 019th district. The problem is I know of at least 18 officers who are bidding out on the same bid to other districts. So yes it continues 8 officers in 18 out net loss of 10. That is of course 18 that I know of, there might be more...

  6. it came to my attention by some others who have also seen a change in absence of our foot patrols in the previous blog named CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY.I was at the C.A.P.S. meeting at District 19 @ the police station few weeks ago and this is very true about the depletion of many cops that were working as foot patrols, both on belmont and halsted streets, are not going to be any more. And when speaking and hearing about this in the open public meeting,NO answers were given by the C.A.P.S. Sergeant why this is. typical. Very unnerving was that the 1 openly gay police officer who is also being shifted away and will be silenced on the overnight shift away from "Boystown" patrolling. I speculate,as a proud gay man why this occurring. Perhaps the TownHall Police station aren't as responsive to the gay, lesbian, trans. people as they proclaim themselves to be.Maybe its time that the person in charge of the Police District 19 should reconsider being in the next annual pride parade as he may not be as supportive of our challenges and priorities. We as gay, lesbian, trans, and straight people should demand equal police treatment from the people who make these police foot patrol dismissals. Our community in "Boystown" and neighboring communities deserves more police protection, not less.Alderman Tunney and the mayor has already been contacted from quite a few people i've talked to.

  7. People need to stop thinking that Prince Rahm or Princess Tunney will care if you contact them. They've proven many times that they don't care about the citizens they were voted in to represent. The only way to make change is to vote them both out of office.

  8. Lara Brooks slanderous tirade was sent from her own email account to members of Wellington Ave. Church, asking them to attend the SELVN meeting. Does anyone know how much rent the church receives from this tenant? And this church loves to proclaim how they stand for justice, except in the case of their own neighbors on Wellington and the surrounding area. The neighbor agreement is worthless piece of paper. The contract should be between the clients and the agency, requiring all clients to behave in a law abiding manner in the neighborhood, or else they will be banned from the agency. Talk about intolerance, this agency and the church are intolerant of the neighbors, supporting an agency that has a history of not cooperating with the police.

  9. Commander EV...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PUT MY FOOT OFFICER BACK ON BELMONT! He has been on a beat car for the past 3-4 weeks and my store, and my neighbor stores on belmont are getting nickel and dimes to DEATH by these petty thieves! When he is there we rarely get any of this nonsense. I know it isn't the crime of the century but as a small business owner who barely makes ends meat it IS a big deal!
