FROSTY: Another Relatively Peaceful Night

A chill in the air helped keep a lid on most shenanigans overnight.

10:12PM
A business near Clark and Belmont reported a disturbance. A large group of people were "loitering and creating a disturbance inside and outside" of the business after leaving the Night Ministry's Tuesday meet-up in the MB Financial Bank parking lot.

3:51AM
Numerous witnesses and staff at the nearby Berlin nightclub called 911 for a man who was down on the ground and in need of medical attention after being beaten up by "a bunch of people" under the L tracks at Belmont. The victim, who was apparently with some co-workers, was no longer on-scene when police and EMS arrived.

Quote of the Week
OFFICER: I just got flagged down by a woman who says she is a homicide victim.
Suspect Description of the Week
DISPATCHER: At 4XXX North Broadway, inside the laundromat, there's a guy selling drugs. He's wearing a black leather coat and carrying a Red Lobster bag and a pink teddy bear.

  1. I've seen pink teddy bear guy many times. Here's an example of why crime is permeating the area:
I had seen him blatantly selling drugs right on the street so many times that one day when I saw him at about 11:30 in the morning I just walked directly to the 19th precinct station house, went inside, approached the desk officer, and said "There is a guy openly selling drugs 2 blocks up the street right on the street right now." Fully and naively expecting that he would immediately provide the info to a cop car, I was blown away when he lazily looked up at the clock, whispered to another officer behind the desk, pondered how to respond to me, and finally said "Call us back after 6 PM tonight. That's when the drug task force works."

  3. I thought the Night Ministry food truck only came Thursday at 9PM. Have they expanded to Tuesday night, too?

    1. Hi Lisa,

They've been on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule for quite a while.

    2. That's why I altered my commute schedule to only take the L to Belmont on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday so I don't have to walk through the throng attracted by Night Ministry on Tuesday and Thursday. On those nights I take a 36 bus up Broadway so I'm nowhere near. I wonder if Night Ministry knows or cares that honest, working citizens are actually modifying their travel habits to avoid the danger they create?

  4. Hey, Tom W,

No one will know you are altering your commute unless you say something. Our 19th District Police Commander Voulgaris requests that residents communicate with him, because that's how he know what what is going on and what we think and feel, and it helps him to best represent his residents' needs. His email is Elias.Voulgaris@chicagopolice.org, as was posted above. Honestly, please email him about things you're concerned about because he's not a mind reader. I have found him to be quite receptive to constructive feedback and input, so please do shoot him a note and provide your input and POV. We all want our neighborhood to be the best it can be, so let's work together to make it that way. Come to CAPS meetings and your neighborhood meetings too. For me it's SELVN, for others it's CLVN, but whatever it is, GET INVOLVED! Become part of your block club or or neighborhood association. Please. Be part of the solution. Thanks.
