WRIGLEYVILLE & SOUTHPORT: 3 Robberies @ Gunpoint; 2 Others Beaten And Robbed

A wave of three robberies at gunpoint and one strong arm robbery swept through Wrigleyville and the Southport corridor overnight. In one case, a witness who saw another man being robbed was subsequently victimized by two offenders who splintered off to rob him, too.
3 robberies with handguns, one robbery/beating, and one arrest
location are plotted on this map. Image; Google.

The trouble began around 1:30 this morning when at least two victims were beaten and robbed near Hawthorne Academy, 3319 N. Clifton, at 1:35AM. Four black male offenders beat and robbed at least two victims, then escaped southbound with two iPhones.

Officers transported one of the victims to Thorek Hospital for treatment.

One of the suspects wore a red hoodie, the other may have worn a white baseball hat backwards.

Case number HW451101.

3 Gunpoint Robberies
• The first gunpoint victim was robbed by six offenders on Roscoe just east of Southport around 3:35 this morning. The robbers took his wallet and cell phone. Four of the offenders apparently fled eastbound on Roscoe while two offenders broke off and robbed a witness who was standing across the street. Both suspects were described as black men. One had dreadlocks and wore a light colored shirt and light colored pants, possibly khakis. CPD case #HW451203

• The second gunpoint victim saw the first victim being robbed. Two offenders from the first attack crossed Roscoe Street and robbed this man at gunpoint, too. CPD case #HW451204

Within minutes, two suspects were stopped by officers in the 1200 block of Melrose: one wearing a red t-shirt, the other wearing a white and blue-striped sweat jacket. These men were positively identified by at least one victim as being participants in at least one of the first two robberies. They are in custody this morning. It is unclear if a third suspect was also taken into custody.

Officers also stopped and interviewed two men with out-of-state IDs near Lakewood and School around 4:25AM. It is not known if these two men were detained.

• The third gunpoint robbery in this area of Lake View occurred within minutes of the other two. A woman was robbed at gunpoint in the 3300 block of North Seminary by two males, both black and in their early 20's who were armed with a black gun. Case #HW451193.

It is not clear if the third gunpoint robbery has been definitively connected to the first two. No one is known to have been detained in this case.

  1. The bad guys are always going to have guns, no matter what. If we allowed the good guys to carry guns too, the bad guys might think twice about committing these crimes. Now they know it's easy pickings and these crimes will continue undeterred. Make concealed carry easier. There are plenty of good and responsible people that would like to carry. In fact, there are a whole lot more of the good guys out there than the bad guys.

    1. The police did catch one of the perps and have charged him with aggravated armed robbery. Hope he gets what he deserves, instead of the usual probation

  2. The problem is that at 3:30-4:30am, I would bet money that most, if not all, of these victims were returning home from the bars. Do conceal/carry proponents also want to encourage bar patrons to carry firearms to avoid victimization when they leave the bars? At this point I almost feel like we need (possibly armed) vigilante groups out on the streets of high traffic neighborhoods in the late night hours. Or individuals stationed at key intersections at 2 block intervals (or some close proximity) in constant communication with one another.

    1. An armed group in high traffic areas late at night that is in communication. We could call it a " police department.“

  3. Obviously the police don't have resources to protect the community and the S/W murder toll is better pub for the pols.

Totally agree with anonymous, we need a LV self defense force.

  4. We live in an area which is loved by all during the days with lots to do, but come night fall you can't even walk to the store or from the El without being robbed and or beaten. When do you think they can bring in more police to patrol these streets? It seems like these robbers just walk around till they see someone and that is there next victim.

  5. I love the area also and in the afternoons there are so much more police around they are writing parking tickets stopping cars for violations they seem to be everywhere when it's light out, but then night falls and the police are not even seen till they are called to do a robbery report or a report for someone that was beaten, too bad they can not see this, the more police are needed at night time not in the daytime or afternoons.

  6. Actually, afternoons in the 19th district has less officers than midnights. On afternoons 75 percent of the cars are one man cars. On midnights almost every car is two man.

  7. Ok afternoon officer you know nothing, Don't talk because you don't want to maybe have to work midnights. We see there are no police at night, we see there are some one manned each night. The sheets don't lie if you care to share with us on here.

    1. Listen buddy you can call the police out all you want but weather you think so or not they are doing a VERY good job with what they have and "They" being the beat cars & Tac cars are limited with resources so do NOT blame them they can only do as much as the bosses/alderman/media/haters will let them do in this area. So you new to vent your frustrations elsewhere because the 19th district coppers actually are trying and doing good job with wht they have. Thanks.
