OVERNIGHT: Reports of Robberies on Broadway and Near Wrigley Field

A man told police that he was jumped by five offenders described as male, black, in their teens or early 20's, around 3:15 this morning at Broadway and Aldine Avenue.

The intersection, one block north of the 24-hour Melrose Restaurant, is home to Nettlehorst School, Caribou Coffee, and several retail shops.

Officers drove around the area with the victim, but the attackers could not be found.

Of the five offenders, the victim offered further descriptions of two. One wore a white tank top and another wore a red hoodie or hooded sweater.

The victim lost his wallet and two phones in the incident. He told officers that he would file a report at a later time.

Also overnight:

Dispatchers sent a unit to Wrigley Field where two off-duty police officers were reportedly holding two offenders for robbery at 4:40AM. No further details are available at this time.

A bicyclist called 911 after a "group of intoxicated people" blocked the street and pushed him down outside of iHop at Halsted and Grace. The caller told dispatch that he didn't want to see the police, he "just want[s] the police to get those people," which is not easy for the police to do when a victim won't file a complaint. That's merely an idea for next time, friend.

  1. Wow, broadway and aldine. I live on Aldine close to LSD. Our quaint street is now hell after the sun goes down. Broadway is starting to look rough. The space where Adesso..then Mr. taco is empty. One storefront is now just ATM machines behind glass. Boarderline Music is gone. Kind of a little scary and sad.

Scary and Sad??? Oh, this is just the beginning of what the area will be like very soon, if SOMEONE DOESN'T DO SOMETHING!

  3. Residents on these troubled streets should take video of the nightly hellscape and post it on youtube. Years ago there was a troubled nightclub and residents got it closed by documenting the constant fights.

  5. This morning there was a robbery at the Walgreens at Belmont and Sheffield around 9:15 am and just a bit ago just south around the intersection of Sheffield and Barry at 5:12 pm a woman had her iPhone stolen. As none of the robberies are acceptable, people could use the argument..."we'll that's what you get for being out so late" for ones at night. But it can be day or night especially with the easy access of the Red, Brown, and Purple lines in this area.

Thank you for sharing the news, Brent. We will work on verifying the details for our readers.

You're right, too. People excuse away late night problems at their own peril. The night time robberies were corralled in the immediate neighborhood for a few years, but they've begun to spread into the periphery. Likewise, they will spread into hours that some people find less acceptable for robbery activity.

The problem will not go away on its own. As the offenders' confidence grows, so will their targeting criteria.

Thank you again for the information, your comments and your concern. We are delighted to have you as a neighbor. Be safe and be well.

  7. I am curious at how many people will carry concealed weapons once the it is allowed? I am a concealed weapons holder in Michigan - and plan on carrying here (live on Sheffield/Belmont). And just so know I am a professional, not a gun nut or anything. But at the end of the day, it's like insurance. Hope I don't need it - but it's good to have just in case...

  8. Im so scared to go out in my own neighborhood anymore. It was the reason myself and others moved here to be together and to be safe. It has gotten so much worse in past 2 years for some reason. Im from New York and it seems like the police have things under control there, but here it is a joke. Might not be a hard choice for myself and many others to think of moving maybe farther north in Andersonville much quieter and much less crime and violence.
