HOT WHEELS: Stolen Van Recovered; Pedicab Long Gone

A security guard at a senior housing high rise at Aldine and Clark reported the theft of a green Caravan minivan at 12:34 this morning. He was also able to give police the vehicle's license plate number.

An officer on patrol quickly found the vehicle near Belmont and Pine Grove. The offender crashed the van into another vehicle as he bailed out. Officers lost the thief in a foot chase.

The offender, described as male, black, in all black clothing, was last seen running eastbound in an alley behind Belmont Avenue. The case will be recorded as an auto theft and recovery. Case numbers HW405411 and HW405462.

Four hours after the theft, the Chicago Police Department had still not found an evidence technician to process the vehicle and it was determined that no technician would be available any time soon. So, the minivan was returned to its owner without evidence collection.

A Chicago pedicab driver had his livelihood stolen from near Halsted and Belmont last night. The driver's green Kona bicycle with attached rickshaw is valued at $1,400. Case #HW405453.

  1. 3-4 a night now? The perps are getting more and more daring. Can I even jog early in the morning anymore?

When is the city going to address this problem? Citizens cannot even arm themselves to protect themselves in any way.

    This is INSANE

Perhaps its time we pay some mafia types for protection.

I'm having a hard time imagining a thief stealing and then selling a pedicab. Just the thought makes me smile thinking how slow a get-away this would be.

Smells fishy. The police will never investigate. But if they did, I would add insurance fraud as a possibility.

Anyone else find this too hard to believe?

  3. Bikes get stolen all the time, and in this case, its possible that someone came along with a pickup and put the pedicab in the back of the truck.

  4. re: pedicab, metal scrappers cashing in probably! They'll take anything that's not nailed down. Every single streetlight on our block has had the metal closure taken, any most of the metal grates on the ground around trees are gone too!
